Lund, in southern Sweden, is one of the oldest towns in Scandinavia and home to one of its most famous universities. Its cobbled lanes, Romanesque cathedral and student life give it a cozy charm.

The cathedral

Lund Cathedral, consecrated in 1145, has an astronomical clock with figures that move at noon and a crypt with a legendary giant.

The town

Kulturen is an open-air museum of old houses. The Lundagård park, university buildings and narrow lanes are full of cafés and bikes.

A day in Lund

Start at Lund Cathedral just before noon or 3 p.m., when the astronomical clock comes to life: knights clash and the Three Wise Men parade past the Virgin Mary while the clock plays a medieval hymn. Then go down into the crypt to find the stone figure of Finn the giant, who according to legend built the church and was turned to stone.

Walk through Lundagård park to the university's main building, then explore Kulturen, an open-air museum of old houses right in the center. In the afternoon, relax in the Botanical Garden or at a café on one of the cobbled lanes.

Good to know

Lund is just 15 minutes by train from Malmö and about 50 minutes from Copenhagen Airport, so it is an easy day trip. Students make up a large part of the population, and the town is full of bicycles, so watch out when crossing the streets.

In spring, the student carnival, held every four years, and Walpurgis Night celebrations bring the town to life. Lund is especially pretty in May, when the trees blossom.
