Uppsala, north of Stockholm, is home to Scandinavia's oldest university, founded in 1477. Its huge cathedral, castle and riverside cafés give it a calm, scholarly atmosphere.
The city
Uppsala Cathedral is the tallest church in Scandinavia. The Gustavianum museum has an anatomical theater, and the Linnaeus Garden recalls the botanist Carl Linnaeus. Uppsala Castle overlooks the city.
Old Uppsala
Gamla Uppsala, just north of the city, has large royal burial mounds from the 6th century, an important pagan center in the Viking age.
