Stavanger, on Norway's southwest coast, is the country's oil capital, but its old town is full of white wooden houses and cobbled lanes. It is the base for hiking to the famous Pulpit Rock above the Lysefjord.
The old town
Old Stavanger has around 170 white wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Øvre Holmegate, nicknamed the colorful street, is painted in bright colors. The Stavanger Cathedral is Norway's oldest.
Pulpit Rock
Preikestolen, Pulpit Rock, is a flat cliff 604 meters above the Lysefjord, reached by a hike of about two hours each way. Fjord cruises also sail beneath it.
