Geiranger is a small village at the end of the Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with steep cliffs and waterfalls like the Seven Sisters.

The fjord

Ferries and cruise ships glide past the Seven Sisters and the Suitor waterfalls. Abandoned mountain farms cling to ledges above the water.

Viewpoints

The Eagle Road climbs in hairpin bends to the Ørnesvingen viewpoint. Mount Dalsnibba offers a view 1,500 meters above the fjord.

A day in Geiranger

Take the fjord cruise from Geiranger to Hellesylt, passing the Seven Sisters and the Suitor waterfalls, which, according to legend, is trying to woo the sisters across the fjord. Kayaking on the fjord is a great way to see the waterfalls up close.

Drive up to Dalsnibba, where the Skywalk platform is 1,500 meters above the fjord, then stop at Flydalsjuvet for the classic view. The Eagle Road in the other direction leads to Ørnesvingen.

Good to know

Geiranger is busiest in summer when cruise ships visit. The roads to Dalsnibba and Trollstigen are usually open from May or June to October.

Hike to the abandoned farm of Skageflå, perched on a ledge above the fjord.

Why it is unforgettable

The Geirangerfjord is often called the most beautiful fjord in the world, and it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Nærøyfjord. Its walls rise more than a thousand meters, and in spring the melting snow feeds countless waterfalls. The Norwegian Fjord Centre in the village explains how glaciers carved the landscape. The drive over the Trollstigen road, with its eleven hairpin bends, combined with the Eagle Road, makes one of the most spectacular road trips in Europe.
