Flåm is a tiny village at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the Sognefjord. It is famous for the Flåm Railway, one of the steepest standard-gauge railways in the world.
The railway
The Flåm Railway climbs 863 meters in 20 kilometers to Myrdal, past waterfalls like Kjosfossen, where the train stops for passengers to admire it.
The fjords
Boats sail into the narrow, UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord. The Stegastein viewpoint juts out over the Aurlandsfjord.
A day in Flåm
Ride the Flåm Railway up to Myrdal and back, past steep valleys, waterfalls and snow-capped peaks. Then take a fjord cruise through the narrow Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen, one of the most beautiful fjord landscapes in the world.
In the evening, drive or take a bus up to the Stegastein viewpoint, a wooden platform hanging 650 meters over the Aurlandsfjord.
Good to know
Flåm is part of the famous Norway in a Nutshell route, combining train, boat and bus from Oslo or Bergen.
Book the railway in advance in summer. Hiking down the valley from Myrdal is a popular alternative.
Why it is so popular
Flåm sits at the inner end of the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in Norway. Despite its tiny size, it welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors a year thanks to its railway and its location. To enjoy the village at its best, stay overnight: in the early morning and evening, when the day-trippers have left, the fjord is calm and quiet. The Rallarvegen, an old construction road, is a famous downhill bike route from the mountains to Flåm.
