Kristiansand, on Norway's south coast, is a relaxed seaside city with beaches, a fish market and the wooden houses of Posebyen. It is the gateway to the southern archipelago.

The city

Posebyen is one of the largest areas of old wooden houses in Northern Europe. The Fiskebrygga fish market is the place for seafood, and Bystranda is a city beach.

Culture and nature

Kilden Performing Arts Centre has a striking wooden facade. Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park is one of Norway's most popular attractions.

A day in Kristiansand

Walk through Posebyen, with its white wooden houses and gardens, then along the waterfront to the fish market. The Kunstsilo, a former grain silo turned into an art museum, is a new landmark.

Spend the afternoon at Bystranda beach or on a boat trip in the archipelago.

Good to know

Kristiansand is Norway's summer city, with warm weather and long days. Families come for the zoo and amusement park.

Ferries to Denmark leave from the harbor.

Why it is worth the trip

Kristiansand was founded in 1641 by King Christian IV, who laid it out in a strict grid of streets called the Kvadraturen, which still forms the center today. The south coast, Sørlandet, is famous for its white-painted wooden villages, rocky islands and sheltered coves, and boat trips from the harbor explore the skerries where locals spend their summer holidays. Odderøya, a former military island close to the center, has walking trails, beaches and viewpoints, and the Ravnedalen park is a green valley with lakes and cliffs.
