The Lofoten Islands, above the Arctic Circle, are among the most beautiful places on Earth, with jagged mountains rising from the sea, white beaches and red fishing cabins called rorbuer.

Villages

Reine, with its red cabins and mountains, is one of the most photographed villages in Norway. Henningsvær has a famous football field on the rocks. Å, at the end of the road, has a fishing museum.

Nature

Beaches like Haukland and Uttakleiv have turquoise water. In summer, the midnight sun never sets; in winter, the northern lights dance over the peaks. Cod is dried on wooden racks everywhere.

Exploring the islands

The E10 road connects the main islands with bridges and tunnels, and driving it from Svolvær to Å is a journey of a few hours with stops at viewpoints, beaches and villages. Hamnøy, with its red cabins on rocks, is one of the most photographed spots. Many people stay in a rorbu, a traditional fisherman's cabin on stilts over the water.

Hiking trails lead to spectacular viewpoints like Reinebringen, which now has stone steps, and Ryten, above Kvalvika Beach. Kayaking and fishing trips are popular.

Good to know

Lofoten is reached by plane, ferry from Bodø or by road. The weather can change very quickly, so dress in layers.

The cod fishing season from February to April fills the drying racks with fish. The islands are crowded in summer, so book accommodation early.
