Tiberias, founded in 20 AD on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, is one of Judaism's four holy cities and a base for visiting Christian sites around the lake.

The lakeside

The promenade is lined with restaurants and boats that sail out on the lake. Hammat Tiberias has hot springs used since Roman times and an ancient synagogue mosaic.

Around the lake

Capernaum, Tabgha and the Mount of Beatitudes, all linked to the life of Jesus, are a short drive away. The Jordan River's Yardenit baptismal site is to the south.

Around the Sea of Galilee

The Sea of Galilee, also called Lake Kinneret, is actually a freshwater lake, about 21 kilometers long and the lowest freshwater lake on Earth. A cycling and driving loop around it takes in beaches, kibbutzim, hot springs and holy sites. Yardenit, on the Jordan River, is where many Christian pilgrims are baptized in white robes. In Ginosar, a 2,000-year-old fishing boat, known as the Jesus Boat, is displayed in a museum. The Golan Heights, with wineries and waterfalls, rise to the east.
