Nazareth, in the Galilee, is the largest Arab city in Israel and a major Christian pilgrimage site, known as the childhood home of Jesus.

The basilica

The Basilica of the Annunciation, the largest church in the Middle East, is built over the grotto where, according to tradition, the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary. Its walls display images of Mary from around the world.

The old city

The old city's souq winds through narrow lanes to the White Mosque and the Church of St Gabriel by Mary's Well. Nazareth is also known for its excellent Arab cuisine and sweets.

A walk through the old city

After visiting the Basilica of the Annunciation, walk up through the narrow lanes of the old city, where small workshops, spice shops and sweet shops line the way. The Synagogue Church marks the place where, according to tradition, Jesus taught as a young man. Higher up, old Ottoman-era mansions with arched windows and painted ceilings recall the city's merchant past. Nazareth's restaurants have made the city known for creative Arab cuisine, and Christmas, with its parade and decorated streets, is the busiest time of year.
