Akko, also known as Acre, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Its walled old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has Crusader halls beneath Ottoman streets, a bustling market and a fishing harbor.
The old city
The Hospitaller Fortress, with its vast Gothic halls, was built by the Crusader Knights. A Templar tunnel runs under the city to the sea. The Al-Jazzar Mosque, with its green dome, is one of the largest mosques in Israel.
Market and harbor
The covered market sells spices, fish and sweets, and the old Khan al-Umdan caravanserai has a clock tower. Walking along the sea walls at sunset is a highlight.
