Malang, in the highlands of East Java, is a pleasant university city with a cool climate, Dutch colonial buildings and colorful neighborhoods. It is the base for sunrise trips to Mount Bromo.

The city

Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan is a riverside village painted in rainbow colors, connected to the blue Kampung Biru by a glass bridge. Ijen Boulevard is lined with colonial villas, and the Alun-Alun square is the city center.

Mount Bromo

Mount Bromo, an active volcano rising from a sea of sand, is famous for sunrise views from Penanjakan. The nearby town of Batu has apple orchards and theme parks.

A day in Malang

Malang is a relaxed hill city with colonial buildings and a cool climate. Visit Kampung Warna-Warni, a hillside village painted in bright colors, and the Kampung Tridi with its 3D murals.

Malang is also the base for Mount Bromo. Tours leave around midnight to reach the viewpoint for sunrise over the smoking crater, then you walk across the Sea of Sand to climb to the crater rim.

Good to know

It gets cold at Bromo before dawn, so bring warm layers. The dry season, from May to October, has the clearest sunrises.

Malang is known for its apples and for bakso Malang, a meatball soup. The Ijen crater, with its blue fire, is also within reach.
