Gili Trawangan is the largest of three small islands off the coast of Lombok. There are no cars or motorbikes, only bicycles and horse carts, and its turquoise water is famous for sea turtles.

The island

A sandy path circles the island in about an hour by bicycle. The east side has the main strip of restaurants and dive shops, while the west side is quieter and famous for sunset swings in the water.

Under the sea

Snorkeling just offshore often brings sightings of green turtles. The underwater statue installation Nest is a popular snorkeling spot. Fast boats link the island to Bali and Lombok.

A day on the island

There are no cars on Gili Trawangan, only bicycles and horse carts, so the best way to start is to cycle around the island, which takes about an hour. Stop on the west coast for the famous swings in the water.

Snorkel off the beach on the east side to see sea turtles, which are very common here. In the evening, watch the sunset over Bali's Mount Agung, then enjoy the night market.

Good to know

Fast boats connect the Gili Islands with Bali and Lombok. Gili Meno and Gili Air, the two smaller islands, are quieter if you want more peace.

There are no ATMs on some smaller islands, so bring cash. The dry season, April to October, has the calmest seas.
