Kuta is where Bali's tourism began, a busy beach town on the island's southwest coast close to the airport. Its long sandy beach is famous for beginner surfing and spectacular sunsets, and the streets behind it are full of shops, bars and nightlife.

The beach

Kuta Beach stretches north into Legian and Seminyak, forming one long beach of golden sand. Surf schools line the shore, and in the late afternoon, crowds gather for the sunset with drinks from beach vendors. Beachwalk, a shopping mall facing the sea, is a popular stop.

Seminyak, to the north, is more upscale, with boutiques, beach clubs and stylish restaurants.

Visiting tips

Traffic around Kuta can be slow, so walk along the beach when you can. Swim between the red and yellow flags, as currents can be strong. Tanah Lot temple and Uluwatu, with its cliff-top temple and Kecak fire dance, are nearby.
