Canggu, on Bali's southwest coast, grew from a quiet village of rice fields into a favorite of surfers and digital nomads. Its black-sand beaches, sunsets, cafés and beach clubs give it a relaxed, creative vibe.

Beaches and sunsets

Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Berawa are the main surf beaches, with waves for beginners and experienced surfers. In the evening, crowds gather on bean bags along the sand to watch the sunset.

Rice fields and temples

Between the cafés and villas, green rice fields still line the roads. Tanah Lot, a temple on a rock in the sea, is a short ride north. Scooters are the main way to get around.

A day in Canggu

Mornings in Canggu begin with surfing at Batu Bolong or Echo Beach, followed by breakfast in one of the many cafés. Then explore the rice fields that still sit between villas and coworking spaces, best seen by bicycle or scooter.

At sunset, everyone heads to the beach or to Tanah Lot, the sea temple on a rock just up the coast, for one of Bali's most famous views.

Good to know

Canggu is a favorite with digital nomads and surfers, so it has a very international feel. Traffic in the narrow lanes can be intense at peak times.

The beaches have black volcanic sand and strong currents; swim only where it is safe. The dry season, April to October, has the best surf on this coast.
