Udaipur, in Rajasthan, is often called the most romantic city in India. White palaces and temples rise from the shores of shimmering lakes, framed by the Aravalli hills.

Palaces and lakes

The City Palace, a vast complex of courtyards and balconies, overlooks Lake Pichola. The Lake Palace, now a hotel, seems to float on the water. Boat rides at sunset are the classic experience.

The old city

The Jagdish Temple stands in the busy old city, where lanes are full of shops selling miniature paintings and textiles. Gangaur Ghat is a lovely spot by the water, with folk dance shows in the evening.

A day in Udaipur

Start at the City Palace, a huge complex of courtyards and balconies above Lake Pichola. Then take a boat on the lake to see the Lake Palace and Jag Mandir island.

Wander through the old city lanes around the Jagdish Temple and the ghats, and climb to the Monsoon Palace for sunset over the lakes and hills.

Good to know

Udaipur is known as the 'City of Lakes' and is one of the most romantic places in India. Rooftop restaurants offer lake views.

Bagore Ki Haveli hosts an evening show of Rajasthani dance. The best time to visit is from September to March, after the monsoon fills the lakes.
