Jodhpur, on the edge of the Thar Desert, is known as the Blue City for the indigo-painted houses of its old town. Above it rises Mehrangarh, one of the largest forts in India.

Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort stands on a rocky cliff 120 meters above the city. Inside are richly decorated palaces and a museum, and its ramparts offer views over the blue houses below.

The blue city

The lanes of the old city are painted in shades of blue. The Clock Tower and Sardar Market are the busy heart of town. Jaswant Thada, a white marble memorial, is nearby.

A day in Jodhpur

Climb up to Mehrangarh Fort in the morning; the audio guide is excellent. Then walk down through the blue houses of Brahmpuri, the old Brahmin quarter.

Visit the Clock Tower and Sardar Market for spices and textiles, and the Toorji Ka Jhalra stepwell. End with sunset at Jaswant Thada, a white marble memorial.

Good to know

The fort has a zipline course over its walls. The best time to visit is October to March.

Try the mirchi vada, a spicy fried chilli, and makhaniya lassi. Jodhpur is a good base for exploring the Thar Desert.
