Delhi, India's capital, has been the seat of empires for centuries. Its old city is a maze of crowded bazaars and Mughal monuments, while New Delhi, designed by the British, has wide avenues and government buildings.
Old Delhi
The Red Fort, built by Shah Jahan, the emperor who also built the Taj Mahal, was the main residence of the Mughal emperors. Nearby, the Jama Masjid is one of India's largest mosques. Chandni Chowk, the main street, is a chaotic, fascinating bazaar of spices, fabrics and street food.
New Delhi
India Gate and the Kartavya Path lead to the President's House. Humayun's Tomb, a forerunner of the Taj Mahal, and the Qutub Minar, a 73-meter minaret, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Lotus Temple and Akshardham are modern landmarks.
