Goa, on India's west coast, was a Portuguese colony for more than 450 years. Its palm-fringed beaches, whitewashed churches and relaxed atmosphere make it India's favorite beach destination.

Panjim and Old Goa

Panjim, the capital, has the colorful Latin Quarter of Fontainhas and the white Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Old Goa's grand churches, including the Basilica of Bom Jesus, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Beaches

North Goa's beaches, like Baga, Calangute and Anjuna, are lively, with beach shacks and markets. South Goa's Palolem and Agonda are calmer.

Exploring Goa

Spend a morning in the Latin Quarter of Fontainhas in Panjim, with colorful Portuguese houses. Then visit Old Goa, where the Basilica of Bom Jesus holds the remains of St Francis Xavier.

Choose your beach: the north is lively with markets and nightlife, while the south, around Palolem and Agonda, is calmer. Many visitors rent a scooter to explore.

Good to know

The season runs from November to March. During the monsoon, many beach shacks close, but the countryside turns green and waterfalls flow.

Goan food mixes Indian and Portuguese influences: try fish curry rice, vindaloo and bebinca. The Saturday Night Market in Arpora is fun.
