Oulu, on the Gulf of Bothnia, is the largest city in northern Finland. Known for technology and cycling, it was a European Capital of Culture in 2026.

The city

The market square by the sea has a red market hall, old salt warehouses and the chubby Toripolliisi police statue. Bridges link small islands in the Oulu River delta.

Outdoors

Oulu has hundreds of kilometers of cycle paths used even in winter. Nallikari Beach has sand dunes and, in winter, ice-swimming and sea-ice walks.

A day in Oulu

Start at the Market Square by the sea, with its old red wooden salt warehouses turned into cafés and shops, and say hello to the Toripolliisi statue. Walk across the bridges to the Hupisaaret islands, a park of rivers, rapids and greenhouses. In summer, rent a bike and ride to Nallikari Beach, or join locals at an outdoor sauna. In winter, try walking on the frozen sea or ice-swimming, followed by a hot sauna. Oulu's long summer days and its love of cycling give the city a relaxed, sporty feel.
