Kuopio, in the heart of the Finnish Lakeland, is surrounded by Lake Kallavesi. It is known for its lively market square, Puijo Tower and traditional smoke saunas.

The city

The market square, one of Finland's busiest, has a beautiful Art Nouveau market hall. The harbor is the base for lake cruises in summer.

Views and saunas

Puijo Tower, on a forested hill, offers panoramic views of the lakes. Jätkänkämppä has one of the largest smoke saunas in the world, followed by a lake dip.

A day in Kuopio

Start at the market square and the Market Hall, then walk down to the harbor for a lake cruise among the islands of Kallavesi. In the afternoon, take a bus or drive up to Puijo Hill, where an elevator rises to the tower's viewing deck and revolving restaurant. In the evening, visit the Jätkänkämppä smoke sauna, heated for hours with wood, then cool off in the lake, even in winter through a hole in the ice. It is one of the most authentic Finnish experiences.
