Harju Ridge, a forested hill with steps and a lookout tower, overlooks the city and Lake Jyväsjärvi. A walking path circles the lake.

A day in Jyväskylä

Start at the Alvar Aalto Museum and walk through the university campus, where his red-brick buildings stand among pine trees. Then climb Harju Ridge, either up the long stone stairway or by the forest paths, to the Vesilinna lookout tower. In the afternoon, walk or cycle the 12-kilometer path around Lake Jyväsjärvi, or take a boat cruise on the lakes. Säynätsalo Town Hall, on an island south of the city, is one of Aalto's most admired buildings and can be visited.
