Paphos, on the southwest coast, is so rich in ancient remains that the whole town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its harbor, with a small medieval fort, is the center of a relaxed resort, and the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite is just along the coast.

The harbor and the mosaics

The harbor promenade, guarded by Paphos Castle, is lined with cafés and fish restaurants. Right behind it, the Paphos Archaeological Park holds the remains of Roman villas whose floors are covered with some of the finest mosaics in the Mediterranean, showing gods, heroes and hunting scenes.

To the north, the Tombs of the Kings are underground tombs carved into the rock, some decorated with Doric columns, where high officials were buried from the 4th century BC.

The old town and the coast

Ktima, the old upper town, has a covered municipal market and a newly renovated pedestrian center. Along the coast to the east, Petra tou Romiou, or Aphrodite's Rock, is where the goddess is said to have risen from the waves.
