Larnaca, home to the island's main airport, is an easygoing seaside town built on the site of the ancient city of Kition. Its palm-lined promenade faces a sandy town beach, and in winter flamingos gather on the nearby Salt Lake.

Finikoudes and the old town

Finikoudes, the seafront promenade named after its palm trees, is lined with cafés, bars and restaurants, with a long sandy beach in front. At its southern end, the small medieval fort stands next to the old Turkish quarter.

Inland, the Church of Saint Lazarus, built in the 9th century over the tomb of the saint, has a richly carved wooden iconostasis.

The Salt Lake

Just outside the city, the Larnaca Salt Lake fills with water in winter and attracts thousands of flamingos. On its shore, the Hala Sultan Tekke, a mosque among palm trees, is one of the most important Muslim shrines in the region.
