Limassol, Cyprus' second city and main port, is the island's most cosmopolitan place, with a long seafront promenade, a smart marina and a growing skyline. Its old town around the medieval castle is full of tavernas, and the island's wine villages are in the hills just behind.

The seafront and the marina

The Molos promenade runs along the sea for several kilometers, with palm trees, sculptures, playgrounds and cafés. At its western end, Limassol Marina has yachts, restaurants and shops beside the old port.

The old town and around

Limassol Castle, where Richard the Lionheart is said to have married Berengaria of Navarre in 1191, houses the Cyprus Medieval Museum. The lanes around it, with the Grand Mosque and the old Carob Mill, are full of bars and tavernas.

West of the city, the ancient city of Kourion has a Greco-Roman theater on a cliff above the sea. Every autumn Limassol holds a wine festival, and the Carnival in late winter is the biggest on the island.
