Srimangal, in the Sylhet division, is known as the tea capital of Bangladesh. Green tea estates cover the rolling hills, and the Lawachara rainforest is home to hoolock gibbons.
Tea gardens
Tea estates stretch in every direction, with workers plucking leaves under shade trees. A local tea house serves the famous 'seven-layer tea', with seven colored layers.
Forest
Lawachara National Park is a rainforest where you can hear gibbons calling. Indigenous Khasi and Manipuri villages are nearby.
A day in Srimangal
Start early with a walk or a rickshaw ride through the tea estates, when the light is soft and the workers begin plucking the leaves. Then head to Lawachara National Park, where guides lead walks under a rainforest canopy and the calls of hoolock gibbons echo through the trees. In the afternoon, visit a Khasi village, where people grow betel leaf, or relax by a lake in the tea hills. Finish with a glass of the famous seven-layer tea in town.
