Khulna, Bangladesh's third-largest city, lies on the Rupsha River. It is the gateway to the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world and home of the Bengal tiger.

The city

The riverside is busy with boats and ferries. Markets sell fish, shrimp and produce from the delta.

Around Khulna

Boat trips go into the Sundarbans, a UNESCO site of mangroves, rivers and wildlife. Bagerhat's Sixty Dome Mosque, from the 15th century, is another UNESCO site nearby.

A day in Khulna

Start at the Rupsha riverbank, where ferries and fishing boats come and go, then visit the busy Boro Bazar for fish, shrimp and vegetables. Take a day trip to Bagerhat, about an hour away, to see the Sixty Dome Mosque, actually supported by sixty pillars and crowned with 77 domes, built in the 15th century by the saint Khan Jahan Ali. For the Sundarbans, most visitors join a two- or three-day boat trip, sleeping on board and exploring creeks by small boat, where spotted deer, crocodiles and kingfishers are common and tigers are rare but present.
