Bandarban, in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, has Bangladesh's highest peaks, waterfalls and cloud-covered hills, and is home to Marma, Bawm and other indigenous peoples.

The hills

Nilgiri and Nilachal are viewpoints where clouds drift below you. The road to Thanchi winds through dramatic hills.

Temples and lakes

The Golden Temple, a Buddhist monastery on a hilltop, is the largest Theravada temple in Bangladesh. Boga Lake is a mysterious crater lake high in the hills.

Why it is special

Bandarban is the most mountainous district in Bangladesh, home to about a dozen indigenous groups, including the Marma, Bawm and Mro peoples, each with their own culture and language. The town of Bandarban is small, but the roads climbing into the hills offer some of the most spectacular views in the country, especially when clouds fill the valleys below. Treks lead to remote villages, waterfalls like Nafakhum and peaks such as Keokradong. Some areas require permits and a local guide.
