Kuakata, on the southern tip of Bangladesh, is a long beach on the Bay of Bengal where you can watch both sunrise and sunset over the sea.

The beach

The 18-kilometer beach is lined with fishing boats and, at the eastern end, a forest of coconut palms and the Gangamati mangroves.

Culture

Rakhine communities live in villages nearby, with Buddhist temples such as the one holding a large Buddha statue at Misripara.

A day in Kuakata

Wake up before dawn and walk east along the beach to watch the sunrise over the Bay of Bengal, then return in the evening to the western end for sunset over the sea, a rare double show from a single beach. During the day, ride a motorbike along the hard sand to Gangamati's mangroves and the Lebur Char area, and visit the fish-drying yards where workers spread the catch in the sun. In the afternoon, visit the Rakhine villages and the Buddhist temples nearby.
