Sapa is a mountain town in the far northwest of Vietnam, near the Chinese border. It is surrounded by dramatic valleys of terraced rice fields and villages of ethnic minorities such as the Hmong and Red Dao, and it is the country's most famous trekking destination.

The town

Sapa town was built by the French as a hill station in the early 20th century. Its stone church stands in the main square, and the lake and market are lively, especially at weekends. Hmong and Red Dao women in traditional clothing sell handmade textiles and often guide treks.

The Fansipan cable car climbs to the summit of the highest mountain in Indochina, at 3,143 meters, where temples and pagodas sit among the clouds.

Villages and rice terraces

Walking trails lead down into the Muong Hoa Valley to villages like Cat Cat, Lao Chai and Ta Van, through rice terraces carved into the mountains over generations. Homestays offer the chance to stay with local families.

The rice fields are green in summer and turn golden before the harvest in September and October, which is the most beautiful time to visit.

Visiting tips

Sapa is about five or six hours from Hanoi by bus, or overnight by train to Lao Cai. Winters can be cold and foggy, sometimes with snow. Hire a local guide for longer treks, and bring good walking shoes, as paths can be muddy.
