Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island, in the Gulf of Thailand. It is known for white sand beaches, clear water, spectacular sunsets and a relaxed pace, along with traditional products like fish sauce and pepper. Large resorts have grown on the island, but much of it is still covered by a national park.
Beaches and sunsets
Long Beach, on the west coast, stretches for about 20 kilometers and is the best place for sunsets. In the south, Sao Beach has powdery white sand and turquoise water. Snorkeling and boat trips visit the An Thoi islands, a group of small islands off the southern tip.
Sunset Town, a new Mediterranean-style development in the south, has colorful buildings, a 'Kiss Bridge' over the sea and evening shows. Nearby, one of the world's longest over-sea cable cars links the island to Hon Thom.
Duong Dong and island life
Duong Dong, the main town, has a lively night market with seafood stalls and a small temple on a rock at the river mouth. Fish sauce factories with huge wooden barrels, pepper farms and pearl farms can be visited.
The northern half of the island is a national park with forest, streams and quieter beaches.
Visiting tips
The dry season from November to April is the best time to visit, with calm seas on the west coast. Phu Quoc has an international airport and visa exemptions for many visitors. Renting a scooter or a car with driver is the easiest way to explore.
