Nha Trang is Vietnam's best-known beach city, with a six-kilometer sandy beach curving around a bay dotted with islands. Behind the palm-lined promenade, a busy city of hotels, markets and seafood restaurants stays lively day and night.
The beach and the bay
Tran Phu, the seafront boulevard, runs along the beach with parks and sculptures between the road and the sand. The water is clearest from March to September, and boat trips visit the islands of the bay for snorkeling and diving around coral reefs. A long cable car crosses the sea to Hon Tre island and its amusement park.
Temples and hot springs
The Po Nagar Cham Towers, built between the 8th and 13th centuries by the Cham people, stand on a hill near the mouth of the Cai River and are still used for worship. The Long Son Pagoda has a large white Buddha on the hillside above the city, and the Nha Trang Cathedral is a gothic-style church built in the 1930s.
Mud baths and hot spring centers on the outskirts of the city are a popular way to relax. Further afield, the beaches of Bai Dai and the Ninh Van Bay are calmer.
Visiting tips
Cam Ranh International Airport is about 35 minutes from the city. Heavy rains can come from October to December. Nha Trang is also connected to Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang by train.
