Da Nang is a modern, fast-growing city on the central coast of Vietnam, with a long sandy beach, a river crossed by striking bridges and green mountains on its edges. It is relaxed, clean and well organized, and the perfect base for Hoi An and Hue.
The river and the beach
The Han River runs through the city center, crossed by several bridges. The Dragon Bridge has a giant golden dragon that breathes fire and water on weekend evenings. The Han River Bridge swings open at night to let ships pass. The riverside promenade is lively after dark, with food stalls and night markets.
My Khe Beach stretches for kilometers along the eastern side of the city, with fine sand and palm trees. Early mornings are busy with locals swimming and exercising, and the beachfront is lined with seafood restaurants.
Mountains and pagodas
The Marble Mountains, five limestone hills south of the city, are full of caves, Buddhist shrines and viewpoints. On the Son Tra Peninsula, the huge white statue of Lady Buddha at Linh Ung Pagoda looks out over the bay, and rare red-shanked douc langurs live in the forest.
Ba Na Hills, reached by one of the world's longest cable cars, is home to the Golden Bridge, held up by two giant stone hands, along with a French-themed village.
Visiting tips
Da Nang's international airport is close to the center. The Hai Van Pass, a spectacular coastal mountain road to Hue, is famous among motorbike riders. February to May is the best time for the beach.
