More London neighborhoods
Shoreditch, on the edge of the City of London, turned from a run-down district of empty warehouses into one of the most creative corners of Europe. Today its walls are covered in street art, its old factories hold studios, bars and tech start-ups, and its markets draw crowds every weekend.
Street art and Brick Lane
Shoreditch is London's open-air gallery. Huge murals cover the sides of buildings, and smaller works, paste-ups and sculptures hide on lamp posts and rooftops. Some pieces stay for years, while others are painted over within weeks, so no two walks are the same. Streets such as Rivington Street, Redchurch Street and Hanbury Street are good places to start.
Brick Lane, running south toward Whitechapel, is the center of London's Bangladeshi community and famous for its curry houses, bagel bakeries and Sunday market. Its history reflects waves of immigrants, from French Huguenot silk weavers to Jewish and Bangladeshi families, and one building has served as a church, a synagogue and a mosque.
Markets and Hoxton
Old Spitalfields Market, in a Victorian market hall, sells fashion, antiques and food every day, and Columbia Road, a short walk north-east, fills with flowers and plants every Sunday morning. Boxpark, a pop-up mall made of shipping containers by Shoreditch High Street station, has street food and shops.
To the north, Hoxton Square and the streets around it are packed with bars and galleries, and the Geffrye building on Kingsland Road houses the Museum of the Home, which shows how Londoners have lived over four hundred years.
A classic walk in Shoreditch
Start at Liverpool Street station and walk to Old Spitalfields Market. Continue along Hanbury Street to Brick Lane and follow it north, looking out for murals on every side street. Cross into Shoreditch at Redchurch Street, visit Boxpark and finish at Hoxton Square. On Sunday, add a detour to Columbia Road Flower Market.
Sunday is the liveliest day, with all the markets open, but also the most crowded. The area is famous for its nightlife, so it stays busy late into the evening.
