Liverpool is a city of music, football and maritime history. Once one of the busiest ports in the world, it gave the world the Beatles and two famous football clubs, and its people, the Scousers, are known for their humor and warmth.
The waterfront
Liverpool's waterfront on the River Mersey is dominated by the Three Graces: the Royal Liver Building, topped by the mythical Liver Birds, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building. Nearby, the Royal Albert Dock, a grand complex of 19th-century warehouses, now houses museums, restaurants and shops.
Here you will find the Beatles Story museum and the Merseyside Maritime Museum, with the free Museum of Liverpool a short walk along the water. Take the famous Mersey Ferry across the river for a view of the skyline.
Music and nightlife
Mathew Street is where the Beatles played hundreds of shows at the Cavern Club in the early 1960s. The club has been rebuilt nearby and still hosts live music every day. The surrounding streets and Concert Square are the center of Liverpool's energetic nightlife, as the featured night walk shows.
The Georgian Quarter is home to two cathedrals at either end of Hope Street, including the vast Anglican Liverpool Cathedral, one of the largest in the world.
Football city
Football is a religion here. Anfield, home of Liverpool FC, stands beside Stanley Park, while Everton moved in 2025 from its historic Goodison Park ground to a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock on the waterfront. Stadium tours let you walk down the tunnel and visit the club museums.
