Lviv, in western Ukraine, has the feel of a Central European city, with an old town of cobbled streets, baroque churches and coffee houses that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the centuries it was ruled by Poland and Austria, and its architecture and cafés reflect that mixed past.

Rynok Square and the old town

Rynok Square, the market square, is surrounded by colorful Renaissance and baroque townhouses, with the town hall in the middle; climbing its tower gives a fine view over the rooftops. Around it, the Latin Cathedral, the Dominican Church and the Armenian Cathedral, with its quiet courtyard, reflect the many communities that once lived here.

Coffee, chocolate and the opera

Lviv is famous for its coffee culture, and the smell of roasting beans and chocolate drifts through the old town. Svobody Avenue, a leafy boulevard, leads to the grand Lviv Opera House, built in 1900. For views over the whole city, climb to the High Castle hill, and for a walk among history, visit the romantic Lychakiv Cemetery.

Lviv today

Far from the front lines, Lviv became a refuge for many displaced Ukrainians after 2022, and its streets remain busy with cafés and cultural life, although the city has also been struck by attacks. Check current travel advice before any visit.
