Kamianets-Podilskyi, in western Ukraine, is built on a rocky island almost entirely surrounded by the deep canyon of the Smotrych River. Its old town and its storybook fortress, guarding the only land approach, made it one of the most strongly defended cities in Eastern Europe.

The fortress and the old town

The castle, with its round towers and walls rising above the canyon, dates back to the Middle Ages and was rebuilt by the Poles and Ottomans who fought over the region. It is reached by the so-called Turkish Bridge across the gorge.

In the old town, the Polish Market Square and the Armenian quarter recall the communities who traded here. The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul has a minaret beside it, a reminder of the period when the Ottomans turned it into a mosque in the 17th century; the Poles later crowned the minaret with a statue of the Virgin Mary.

Visiting tips
