Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, is a major university and industrial center in the northeast. It was the capital of Soviet Ukraine in the 1920s and 1930s, and its broad avenues, parks and pioneering modernist buildings date from that era.
Freedom Square and Derzhprom
Freedom Square is one of the largest city squares in Europe. On one side stands Derzhprom, the State Industry Building, completed in 1928 as one of the first Soviet skyscrapers and a landmark of constructivist architecture. Sumska Street, the main avenue, leads past theaters and cafés to the square.
Parks and churches
Shevchenko Garden, next to the university, and the larger Gorky Park are the city's favorite green spaces. In the historic center, the bell tower of the Assumption Cathedral and the gold-domed Annunciation Cathedral rise above the Lopan River.
Kharkiv today
Only about 30 kilometers from the Russian border, Kharkiv has been heavily shelled since 2022, and many buildings, including some on Freedom Square, have been damaged. Its residents have kept the city running, with schools moved into metro stations at times. Travel is strongly discouraged; check current advice.
