Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, founded more than 1,500 years ago on the hills above the Dnipro River. Its gold-domed churches and monasteries, wide boulevards and leafy parks have made it the heart of Ukrainian history and identity.

Churches and monasteries

St. Sophia's Cathedral, built in the 11th century, is the city's oldest surviving church, with original mosaics and frescoes, and together with the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Lavra, a vast monastery complex on the hills above the river, has golden domes, bell towers and underground caves where monks are buried.

Across a square from St. Sophia's stands the blue-walled St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery, rebuilt in the 1990s after its destruction in the Soviet era.

Khreshchatyk, Maidan and Podil

Khreshchatyk, the main avenue, leads to Maidan Nezalezhnosti, Independence Square, the scene of the Orange Revolution of 2004 and the Revolution of Dignity of 2013 and 2014. The street closes to traffic on weekends and becomes a promenade.

From the upper town, the cobbled Andriivskyi Descent winds down past St. Andrew's Church and artists' stalls to Podil, the old merchants' district by the river, now full of cafés. The funicular links Podil with the upper town, and the Arsenalna metro station, at about 105 meters below ground, is one of the deepest in the world.

Kyiv today

Since the full-scale invasion in 2022, Kyiv has lived with air raid alerts and a night-time curfew, and many monuments are protected by sandbags. Yet cafés, theaters and parks remain open, and the city's resilience has become part of its identity. Most governments advise against travel; check current advice before any visit.
