Medina is Islam's second holiest city, home to the Prophet's Mosque, where the Prophet Muhammad is buried. Millions of pilgrims visit every year. (The central area around the mosque is open to Muslims only.)

The Prophet's Mosque

Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, with its green dome and giant umbrellas that open in the courtyard, is one of the largest mosques in the world.

Around the city

Quba Mosque is the first mosque built in Islam. Mount Uhud, site of a famous early battle, lies north of the city. Medina is surrounded by date palm groves and its markets sell dozens of varieties.

Visiting Medina

Medina has opened more to visitors in recent years, and areas such as Quba Avenue, a pedestrian promenade leading to the Quba Mosque, are pleasant to walk. Non-Muslim visitors can explore the city but may not enter the central Haram area. The Hejaz Railway station, built during the Ottoman era, is now a museum, and the Uhud Martyrs' site recalls an important early battle. Medina's date markets are among the best in the world, and Ajwa dates are especially prized.
