Dammam, on the Arabian Gulf, is the capital of the Eastern Province and part of a metropolitan area with Khobar and Dhahran, the heart of the Saudi oil industry.

The coast

The Dammam Corniche has parks, playgrounds and seafront walks. Half Moon Bay, south of the city, is a popular beach.

Culture

Ithra, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in nearby Dhahran, is a striking building with museums, a library and cinemas.

Why it is worth a visit

Dammam grew rapidly after oil was discovered nearby in 1938, at the famous Dammam No. 7 well, which marked the start of Saudi Arabia's oil age. Today it is a modern city with wide corniches, waterfront parks and malls. The Heritage Village offers a look at traditional life. Across the water, the island of Tarout has an old fort and is one of the oldest inhabited places in the region. The city is also close to the Al-Ahsa Oasis, a UNESCO site with millions of palm trees.
