Vigan, in northern Luzon, is the best-preserved Spanish colonial town in Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its cobbled streets, stone houses and horse-drawn carriages feel like stepping back in time.

Calle Crisologo

Calle Crisologo is lined with ancestral houses with wooden balconies and capiz shell windows. Kalesa horse carriages clip along the cobblestones, especially magical at night.

The town

St Paul's Cathedral and Plaza Salcedo are the heart of town. In the evening, a dancing fountain show takes place at Plaza Salcedo.

Good to know

Vigan is one of the best-preserved Spanish colonial towns in Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its houses mix Spanish, Chinese and Filipino styles, with stone ground floors, wooden upper stories and capiz-shell windows. Calle Crisologo is most atmospheric at night, when lanterns light the cobbles and the crowds thin out.

Take a kalesa ride around town, visit the St. Paul Cathedral and the Syquia Mansion, and watch potters at a traditional pottery workshop. Try Vigan empanada, filled with egg, longganisa sausage and green papaya, and bagnet, crispy fried pork. Vigan is about eight to nine hours by bus from Manila, or a short flight to Laoag.
