Panglao Island, connected to Bohol by bridges, has white sand beaches and great diving. Bohol itself is famous for the Chocolate Hills and the tiny tarsier, one of the smallest primates in the world.

Panglao

Alona Beach is the lively center, with dive shops and restaurants. Dumaluan Beach is quieter, and the Hinagdanan Cave has a swimming lagoon.

Bohol

The Chocolate Hills, more than 1,200 grassy mounds that turn brown in the dry season, are Bohol's icon. The Tarsier Sanctuary protects the big-eyed tarsiers, and lunch cruises float down the Loboc River.

A day around Bohol

Panglao's Alona Beach is the base, but the main Bohol island is full of surprises. A day tour takes in the Chocolate Hills, more than a thousand grassy domes that turn brown in the dry season, and the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary, where you can see one of the world's smallest primates.

On the way, stop at the Baclayon Church, one of the oldest in the country, and float down the Loboc River on a boat with a lunch buffet and music. In the morning, dolphin-watching tours leave early from Panglao toward Pamilacan Island.

Good to know

Panglao has its own international airport. Alona Beach is lively, while Dumaluan and Dona Rosario beaches are quieter.

Diving and snorkeling around Balicasag Island are excellent, with turtles and reef walls. Be gentle with tarsiers, which are sensitive to noise and flash photography.
