Davao City, on the island of Mindanao, is one of the largest cities in the world by land area, and known for its parks, its fruit and the nearby Mount Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines.

The city

People's Park has sculptures and gardens. The Philippine Eagle Center protects the national bird, one of the largest eagles in the world. Fruit markets are full of durian, the city's favorite.

Island escapes

Samal Island, a short ferry ride away, has white beaches and resorts. Mount Apo attracts climbers.

A day in Davao

Davao is one of the largest cities in the world by land area, but its center is easy to explore. Visit People's Park, with its sculptures and fountains, and the San Pedro Cathedral. The Philippine Eagle Center, in the hills outside the city, protects the country's national bird, one of the largest eagles in the world.

In the evening, Roxas Night Market offers grilled food and fruit. Davao is the country's fruit capital, famous for durian, pomelo and mangosteen.

Good to know

Davao is considered one of the cleanest and most orderly cities in the Philippines, with strict rules on smoking and noise.

Mount Apo, the country's highest peak, rises above the city, and Samal Island, a short ferry ride away, has beach resorts. The Kadayawan Festival in August celebrates the harvest.
