Multan, one of the oldest cities in South Asia, is called the 'City of Saints' for its many Sufi shrines decorated with blue tiles. It is also famous for mangoes and sohan halwa.

Shrines

The Shrine of Shah Rukn-e-Alam, a huge octagonal tomb of brick and blue tiles, dominates the old fort. The Shrine of Bahauddin Zakariya stands nearby.

The old city

Ghanta Ghar, the clock tower, stands at the heart of the old city. Bazaars sell blue pottery, embroidered textiles and camel-skin lamps.

A walk through the old city

Multan's walled old city has six gates, and the Hussain Agahi Bazaar inside is one of the oldest markets in the region, full of blue pottery, embroidered shawls and khussa shoes. The Sufi shrines are busiest on Thursday evenings, when devotees gather and qawwali music is often performed. The tomb of Shah Rukn-e-Alam, from the 14th century, is so large that it can be seen from far across the plains. Multan is hot in summer, so the winter months are the best time to visit.
