Putrajaya, south of Kuala Lumpur, is Malaysia's planned administrative capital, built around a large artificial lake with grand government buildings, mosques and striking bridges.
Landmarks
The pink-domed Putra Mosque stands on the lake next to Putra Square and the Perdana Putra, the prime minister's office. The Iron Mosque is a modern steel-and-glass mosque.
Lake and bridges
Lake cruises pass under elegant bridges like the Seri Wawasan. The city is beautifully lit at night.

At night, the bridges and buildings are lit up.
Good to know
Putrajaya is Malaysia's administrative capital, about 30 minutes from Kuala Lumpur.
It is quiet compared to KL.
A planned garden city
Putrajaya was built from scratch in the 1990s on former oil palm plantations to become Malaysia's new government center, and it is laid out like a giant garden city around a man-made lake. Wide boulevards connect monumental buildings that mix Islamic, Malay and modern styles. The Putra Mosque, built of rose-tinted granite, can hold 15,000 worshippers and welcomes visitors outside prayer times, with robes provided at the entrance.
Each of the city's bridges has a different design, from the Seri Wawasan's sail-like cable-stayed shape to the Seri Saujana's arch. The Iron Mosque, Masjid Tuanku Mizan, is made largely of steel and glass. The Taman Botani botanical garden and the Wetland Park are peaceful places for a walk or bike ride, especially in the cooler hours of the morning.
