Why it is worth a visit

Johor Bahru, often called JB, is Malaysia's second-largest city and the capital of the state of Johor. Its old town has been revitalized, and streets like Jalan Dhoby and Jalan Tan Hiok Nee are lined with restored shophouses, art cafés and traditional coffee shops. The Old Chinese Temple, one of the oldest buildings in the city, unites five Chinese communities under one roof.

The Istana Besar, the sultan's palace, overlooks the Straits of Johor from beautiful gardens. In the evening, the food courts and night markets are packed with locals enjoying laksa Johor, mee rebus and seafood. Many travelers combine a visit with Singapore, just across the strait.
