Ipoh, in the state of Perak, grew rich from tin mining. Its colonial old town, street murals, limestone cave temples and famous food make it a favorite weekend escape from Kuala Lumpur.

The old town

Concubine Lane is a narrow lane of shophouses and stalls. Murals by Ernest Zacharevic decorate the walls, and the Ipoh Railway Station is a grand colonial building.

Caves

Buddhist temples are built inside limestone caves around the city, such as Kek Lok Tong and Sam Poh Tong.

A day in Ipoh

Ipoh's old town is a pleasure to explore on foot. Start with breakfast of white coffee, the city's famous drink, and egg tarts, then wander Concubine Lane, with its colorful shophouses and souvenir stalls, and look for the street art murals by Ernest Zacharevic.

In the afternoon, visit the cave temples carved into the limestone hills around the city, such as Kek Lok Tong and Perak Tong, where Buddhist shrines sit inside huge caverns.

Good to know

Ipoh grew rich from tin mining, and its grand colonial buildings, like the railway station, reflect that. It is about two hours from Kuala Lumpur by train.

Food is a big reason to visit: try bean sprout chicken, salted chicken and the smooth tofu dessert called tau fu fah.
