The Cameron Highlands, at about 1,500 meters, is Malaysia's largest hill station, with cool weather, rolling tea plantations, strawberry farms and misty forests.
Tea plantations
The Boh Tea estates cover the hills in bright green rows, with tea rooms overlooking the valleys. Strawberry and flower farms line the roads.
Forests
The Mossy Forest, a cloud forest covered in moss, has boardwalks among ancient trees. Towns like Tanah Rata and Brinchang have night markets.
A day in the highlands
Visit a tea plantation such as BOH, where you can sip tea on a terrace overlooking rolling green hills. Then explore the Mossy Forest, a cloud forest with boardwalks among moss-covered trees.
In the afternoon, pick strawberries and visit the markets of Brinchang, where vegetables, flowers and honey are sold.
Good to know
The highlands are cool, around 15 to 25°C, making them a popular escape from the heat. Tanah Rata is the main town.
Weekends and holidays get very busy. Bring a light jacket for the evenings.
Why people love it
The Cameron Highlands were developed by the British in the 1930s as a hill station, and some Tudor-style buildings, like the Smokehouse area, still recall that time. Today, the slopes are covered with tea estates, vegetable farms, flower nurseries and strawberry farms, and the cool climate draws families from all over Malaysia.
Hiking trails, numbered from 1 to 14, lead through the jungle from Tanah Rata and Brinchang to waterfalls and hilltops, though some are steep and muddy, so check conditions first. The Sungai Palas tea estate has a viewing deck over a valley of perfectly trimmed tea bushes, a classic photo spot. In the evening, the Brinchang night market sells grilled corn, strawberries and steamboat ingredients.
