Limerick, on the River Shannon, is Ireland's third-largest city. It has a medieval castle, Georgian streets, a lively market and a passion for rugby.

History

King John's Castle, a 13th-century fortress on the Shannon, has interactive exhibits. St Mary's Cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in the city. The Georgian quarter, Newtown Pery, has elegant terraces.

The city

The Milk Market is a covered market of food and crafts on weekends. The riverside walks and the Hunt Museum are worth a visit, and Bunratty Castle is nearby.

A city by the Shannon

Limerick sits on the River Shannon, Ireland's longest river, and much of its history is tied to the water. King John's Castle, built in the early 13th century, has an interactive museum about sieges, and the walls offer a good view of the river and the city. Nearby, St Mary's Cathedral, founded in 1168, is the oldest building in Limerick still in daily use.

The city has changed a lot in recent years, with a revitalized riverfront, a strong university and a lively food scene. On Saturdays, the Milk Market, in a historic covered building, fills with stalls selling local cheese, bread and hot food. Limerick is also a good base for the west: the Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty Castle and the Burren are all within an hour's drive.
