Dingle, in County Kerry, is a small fishing town of colorful shops and pubs at the edge of Europe. It is surrounded by the wild landscapes of the Dingle Peninsula, and Irish is still spoken in the area.

The town

Dingle's streets are lined with brightly painted shops and pubs with traditional music. The harbor was once home to Fungie, a famous friendly dolphin.

Slea Head Drive

The Slea Head Drive loops around the peninsula past cliffs, beaches, ancient stone huts and views of the Blasket Islands. It is one of the most beautiful drives in Ireland.

A day in Dingle

Walk the colorful streets of the town and the harbor, then drive the Slea Head loop, stopping at beaches and ancient stone beehive huts.

In the evening, enjoy traditional music in a pub.

Good to know

Dingle is in the Gaeltacht, where Irish is spoken. The famous dolphin Fungie lived in the harbor for decades.

Local ice cream made with Kerry milk and sea salt is a Dingle treat.

Why it is unforgettable

The Dingle Peninsula is the westernmost point of Ireland, and the landscape feels wild and ancient. The Slea Head Drive circles the tip in about 50 kilometers, passing cliffs, golden beaches like Coumeenoole, prehistoric stone forts and the early Christian Gallarus Oratory, a dry-stone chapel that has stood for over a thousand years. On clear days, you can see the Blasket Islands offshore, once home to a community of Irish-language storytellers.

Dingle town itself is small and colorful, with dozens of pubs, some of which double as hardware shops or shoe shops during the day. The town has a working fishing harbor, a distillery and an aquarium. Boat trips go out to see dolphins, seals and seabirds along the coast.
